ABOUT ME

Me!Hi and welcome to Crafty Gemini! My name is Vanessa and I wish to share my story with you.

In November 2006, my mother came to visit me while I was in my first year of law school. I was so bored at the time because I have always been very active, both physically and mentally, and I felt like law school was bringing me down and I had no creative outlet. So, I decided to harass my mother (once again) to teach me how to sew. I reminded her that she had been telling me she would teach me how to sew for years (since I was 8!) and I also assured her that I would be very careful not to sew my fingers!

When she finally agreed, I was ecstatic. The next weekend she came back to visit me and brought me an old 1966 Singer sewing machine that she found at a garage sale and purchased for $40. She sat me down with different pieces of scrap fabric and told me to practice sewing straight lines. After she left, I sewed about a 1,000 straight lines in different fabrics and was ready for my first sewing project! I didn’t know anything about sewing but I figured it couldn’t be that hard. So, I took an old pair of jeans (that clearly no longer fit) and made a purse out of it! I embellished my new bag with buttons and sequins and everyone who saw it loved it! This was the start of my new found passion!

Since November 2006 I have taken all kinds of sewing and quilting courses and workshops, become a member of several online sewing and quilting communities, and have designed and created works of fabric art for friends and family. Since the first day I sat behind my old and rusty 1966 Singer sewing machine I have fallen in love with the art of sewing!

I am currently teaching beginning sewing classes and a few quilting classes through Santa Fe College's Community Education Program. I have experience teaching children (ages 6+) and adults how to sew and quilt! I am now offering sewing & quilting classes for individuals in my home sewing studio for those of you in the Gainesville, FL area. I offer courses on weeknights AND weekends! Check out our "Sewing & Quilting Classes" tab at the top of the page for up-to-date information!

I hope you enjoy my projects! Thanks again for visiting!
